Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The department of Neurology of the Clinic RWTH Aachen is one regional center within the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease. This center contributes to the scientific projects "DNA-Bank" and "multi center therapeutic studies" and is planing to contribute to the project "stimulation of basal ganglia".
Description of the institution
The department of Neurology (Director Prof. Dr. J. Noth) is the main provider of neurological support for the region of Aachen with 1.000.000 inhabitants. The department contains an intensive care unit, a stroke unit, two normal wards and a special ward for patients with aphasia. Two outpatient's departments specialised in movement disorders have been established - one for patients with the parkinson syndrome, and the other for patients with dystonia or spasticity, who are treated with botulinum toxin. In collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery stereotactic operations are performed for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonia.
