Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The Regional Center Bochum is one of the regional centers in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease. We stay in contact with local physicians - mostly specialized on neurology. Our special task is to prepare, work out and validate material for training and education (in cooperation with Dresden and Marburg).
Description of the institution
The Neurological Clinic of Ruhr-University Bochum, offering 93 beds, covers the whole spectre of neurological diseases. This includes special treatment of movement disorders (special units for Parkinson's disease and other extrapyramidal disorders, e.g. Huntington Centre NRW) cerebrovascular diseases (including Stroke Unit) neuroimmunological diseases (mainly multiple sclerosis) and intensive care neurology.
Treatment also focuses on neurogenetical diseases, and cognitive disorders. Patients are treated both as in- and outpatients. There are special outpatient consultation hours for extrapyramidal and neurodegenerative diseases (including extra- and intracorporal pump application for chronic pains, spastics and Parkinsonian patients with complications in therapy), neuromuscular diseases, neuroimmunological diseases, multiple sclerosis, neurogenetical diseases (including neuropsychologic consultations), Doppler sonography of extra- und intracranial blood vessels, cerebellar disorders and a Botulinum toxin consultation.
Besides basic treatment the Clinic's tasks consist in further development and realisation of therapeutic and diagnostic standards as well as in differential diagnostics and therapy in rare diseases and complicated cases. The clinical research focuses on investigation into new therapeutical approaches, improvement of diagnostic standards and quality management. Part of which is participation in - and initiation of international multicentre studies.
The clinic's own research centres like neurochemical, kinesiological and neurosonological laboratories are engaged in extensive basic research, also in cooperation with further institutions of Ruhr University Bochum (e.g. Department of Human Genetics and Department of Neuropsychology).
