Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The regional partners of the "coordination center east" in Dresden are the University Hospitals of Rostock, Berlin and Dessau. In the vertical net there are cooperations with priority hospitals, special Parkinson hospitals in Stadtroda and Bernburg as well as with specialists in neurology working in their own practices. We have different clinical research groups which concentrate on the evaluation of the motoricity, of the smelling system and on the coordination and the quality management as far as the care of patients with typical and atypical Parkinson syndromes is concerned. We participate in many international and national clinical trials concerning patients with Parkinson syndromes. In addition to clinical diagnostics, differential diagnostics and therapy of patients with Parkinson syndromes we especially focus on researching the etiopathogenesis. Here we concentrate on the energy metabolism and the neuroprotection in cell cultures and post mortem brain tissues. We are greatly involved in the GEPARD project as well as in the deep brain stimulation project. We cooperate closely with the other research institutions of the competence network. Other main study projects are the sonography of the substantia nigra, the cooperation with our collegues from the department of Nuclear Medicine (PET and SPECT examinations) as well as the examination of neurocognitive disorders carried out by the psychiatric hospital of the university.
Description of the institution
The clinic and outpatients' clinic of the Department of Neurology at the University of Dresden has 60 beds. Apart from the emergency care of patients at the stroke unit and intensive care unit there is a special outclinic for movement disorders (especially Parkinson's disease, dystonia and atypical Parkinson syndromes like multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear paralysis). In addition, there are active research teams and clinical groups concerning neuromuscular diseases, neuroimmunology, neurooncology, cerebrovascular diseases and epilepsy. We care for inpatients and outpatients. In our outclinic we offer clinical examination. Other major concerns of our centre are tremor analysis, tests of the smelling system, neurosonographical and nuclearmedical methods as well as evaluation of new therapies within the scope of multicentre medication studies. In cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery we have been offering the possibility of deep brain stimulation for more than five years. Apart from the therapy of patients with Parkinson syndromes we also provide highly frequented and widely renowned botulinumtoxin consulting hours.
