Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
We as a regional center of the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease are associated to the Central Coordination Center at the University Clinic Marburg.
Description of the institution
Clinic: The Department of Clinical Neurophysiology is part of the Center for Neurological Medicine of the medical faculty of the Georg-August University of Goettingen. We offer the full range of neurophysiological investigations, including Doppler-sonography, electroencephalography, evoked potential studies, nerve conduction studies, electromyography and electronystagmography. We furthermore run a neurological ward as well as a monitoring unit. The monitoring unit is used for 24-h online EEG monitoring as part of the diagnostic work-up prior to epileptic surgery. It also serves for monitoring stroke patients during the acute phase as well as polysomographic recording of patients with sleep disturbances. We also offer outpatients clinics for patients with Parkinson's disease, restless legs syndrome, epilepsy and headache.
Research: Our research interests include the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in the management of patients with epilepsy and movement disorders (including Parkinson's disease and focal dystonia) and the use of weak transcranial direct current stimulation for the modulation of cortical excitability. Further areas of research include the prediction of epileptic seizures by online EEG computing and the use of functional MRI for visualising changes in cortical excitability (in collaboration with Prof. Frahm, Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry).
