Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The Department of Neurology (director: PD Dr. Baas) at the Town Hospital Hanau is a regional center of the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease. As a regional center, Hanau, will take an active part in the collection of basic patient data (Project 0), patient blood samples (Project 1) and in the Project 6. The aim of Project 6 is to establish the logistic of a network structure for easy and direct patient data entry in multicentre studies in the research field movement disorders / parkinsonism and to develop, undertake and supervise such studies. It will provide a platform for independent as well as industrially sponsored studies, which will be used to finance the Parkinson Competence Network in the future.
Description of the institution
The Town Hospital Hanau is an University Hospital attached to the University of Frankfurt on the Main. It has 796 beds and is equipped with a wide range of modern diagnostic tools (MRI, CT, DSA, SPECT etc.). 1300 employees are responsible for a catchment area of 400,000 citizens. As the only specialist centre in the Rhein-Main-Region, the Department of Neurology is an important Institution for the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson disease and other movement disorders. With the cooperation of the Neurology and Neurosurgery department of the Goethe University Clinic Frankfurt, follows the indications for deep brain stimulation for patients suffering of Parkinson disease or other movement disorders. In addition, the Neurology Department of Klinikum Hanau, will participate in the studies of new drugs. As well as the provision of inpatient treatment, there is a specialist out patient clinic for movement disorders seeing 400 to 500 patients per year with parkinsonism as well as dystonia or spastic disorders. As it is the only centre for parkinsonism in the Rhein-Main-Region the catchment area for parkinsonism comprises 4 million people. Furthermore, in co-operation with the German Parkinson Organisation, free medical advise is offered to patients with Parkinson's Disease in a project whereby a neurologist regularly visits different regional groups in the Rhein-Main.
