Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The department of neurology of the Hannover medical school is a regional center of the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease and subordinated to the coordination center Kiel. Hannover is part of the research group dealing with deep brain stimulation and participates in several studies concerning symptomatic and protective treatment of patients with Parkinsonian Syndromes.
Description of the institution
Parkinsonian Syndroms make up the clinical emphasis of our movement disorders outpatient clinics. We have collected considerable experience in long-time-treatment of Parkinson´s disease and with the use of deep brain stimulation in patients with Parkinson´s disease. Moreover, our department provides an outpatient clinic for Botulinum toxin and further facilities for patients with dystonia and other forms of movement disorders. Currently, we establish an outpatient clinic for atypical parkinsonian syndromes. For further information please contact our web site. Special research is being done in neurodegenerative diseases such as imaging procedures (functional MRI, PET) which are performed in cooperation with other departments of Hannover Medical School and Magdeburg University. Last not least, we maintain neurophysiological and neuropsychological studies belonging to the "sensory-motor-integration-project" supported by DFG. Other fields of research in our department are neuroimmunology (Prof. Heidenreich), ionic channels and receptor function in neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS (PD Dr. Bufler), experimental clinical neurophysiology (PD Dr. Rollnik), neurometabolic and cerebrovascular diseases (Prof. Weißenborn), and cognition (PD Dr. Johannes).
