Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The Clinic for Neurology of the University Leipzig is one of the regional centers of the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease.
Description of the institution
The clinic of the Department of Neurology at the University of Leipzig has 42 beds. Apart from the emergency care of patients at the stroke unit and intensive care unit there is a special outclinic for movement disorders (especially Parkinson's disease, dystonia and atypical Parkinson syndromes like multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy).
Concerning Parkinson’s disease the center is evaluating new therapies within the scope of multicentre medication studies. The center is experienced in the use of advanced therapies in Parkinson’s disease like Apomorphine-pump or Duodopa-pump. In cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery we have been offering the possibility of deep brain stimulation for more than four years. Apart from the therapy of patients with Parkinson syndromes we also provide highly frequented and widely renowned botulinumtoxin consulting hours.
The center is focusing on research on the possible use of human stem cells in Parkinson’s disease.
