Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The Max-Planck-Institute for Psychiatry, Neurology, is one of the regional centers of the Competence Network for Parkinson’s disease.
Description of the institution
The Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry combines basic research activities with patients care. Founded already in the year 1917 the institute is nowadays one a the major research institutes on psychiatric disorders worldwide. Among more than 500 employees there are about 100 scientists which come from all parts of the world. The hospital consists of 5 wards (1 neurological ward, 3 psychiatric wards, 1 psychiatric ward with intense monitoring) with altogether 120 beds for about 1,200 inpatients per year. In the outpatient units over 5,000 patients are treated every year. Here special diagnostic methods and treatment advice are offered. The Clinic for Movement Disorders offers a complete diagnostic work-up for Parkinson patients. The technical assessment ranges from general neurological testing (including e.g. autonomic and neuropsychological testing, sleep studies) to highly sophisticated imaging studies.
