Rol of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The department of Neurology of the Helios Clinics Schwerin is one regional center in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease. This center contributes to the scientific projects “DNA bank” and “multicenter therapeutic studies”.
Description of the institution
The Department of Neurology is the main provider of neurological support in the region of Schwerin with about 300.000 inhabitants. The department contains an intensive care unit, a stroke unit, two normal wards, an outpatient facility and the complete set of neurological diagnostics. Concerning patients with movement disorders all these facilities can be used for diagnostics and treatment. Besides structural brain imaging (CT, MRI) the department of Nuclear Medicine offers functional imaging including DAT-Scan and IBZM-spect. All medical treaments of Parkinson’s disease are being performed including apomorphine. Patients who have received deep brain stimulation can be controlled and if necessary the parameters can be adapted. Furthermore, patients with essential tremor and with dystonia are being treated.
