Role of the institution in the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease
The outpatient clinic for movement disorders of the Department of Neurology, University of Ulm is one of the regional centers of the Competence Network on Parkinson’s disease.
Description of the institution
One substantial focus of the Neurological Clinic of the University of Ulm is the differential diagnosis of movement disorders as well as the differential therapy of patients with movement disorders in different stages of the disease. In particular, patients with idiopathic Parkinson´s disease (IPD, M. Parkinson) and patients with atypical Parkinsonian syndromes (multiple system atrophy (MSA-P/MSA-C), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), cortico-basal degeneration (CBD) are treated. If an occasional inpatient treatment becomes necessary, these patients will be treated in the inpatient clinic of the Department of Neurology, University of Ulm by use of the most modern treatment strategies.
A substantial interest is the clinical investigation of novel drugs for movement disorders, in particular with respect to potential neuroprotective effects. The aim of these studies is to improve the identification of therapeutic strategies which might slow the progress of these disorders.
In cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Ulm, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is offered as a therapeutic option to patients with advanced IPD. Thus, DBS is available for severely affected patients who can no longer sufficiently be treated by pharmacological strategies. Specific interests exist in the neuropsychological investigations of these patients. In the future, further experimental therapy procedures are to be offered in Ulm.
