The Parkinson-Klinik Wolfach is one of the oldest clinics specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's disease in Germany. Since its foundation in 1953, over 35,000 people with Parkinson's disease and related movement disorders have been treated here. These disorders include multi-system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear paralysis, corticobasal degeneration, dystonia and various forms of tremor.

The neurological clinic has over 60 beds. Newly built in 2003, the residential unit houses 30 light, well-appointed and wheelchair-friendly patient rooms, some with a panoramic view of the Black Forest.

A 176-m²-large gym, eight therapy rooms for one-on-one gymnastic sessions and an exercise pool are available for use by the patients. The clinic also has a dining hall, conference hall, reading room with library, TV room, a worship room and a large auditorium which can be used as a meeting area.

Gardens and an outdoor therapy area extending over 10,000 square metres support the clinic's holistic treatment concept.

Because of its specialisation, the Parkinson-Klinik Wolfach takes on patients not just from the immediate area. To be admitted for in-patient treatment, a hospital referral from the patient's GP is required.

Private out-patient services by senior physician

The clinic also offers a private out-patient service provided by senior physicians.

Private patients and their relatives can stay in the comfortable accommodation offered by the clinic's own "Gästehaus am Park”. It houses seven apartment-style rooms, each with patio or balcony, breakfast room and conservatory.

In the service of the patient

The key philosophy and everyday concern of all members of staff at the clinic are to make the patients and their relatives the focal point of their efforts. The friendly and very personal atmosphere at the clinic is a key element of our treatment concept.

The primary aim of the team of therapists is to alleviate the patients’ physical and emotional discomfort, to preserve their independence and ability to work for as long as possible, and to improve their quality of life.

Regular conferences for researchers and practitioners at the Parkinson-Klinik Wolfach ensure that the latest scientific findings are included in the clinic's treatment concept on a continual basis.

The clinic's quality management has been repeatedly certified by the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Zertifizierung von Managementsystemen (DQS).

Clinical focuses

  • Differential diagnosis of the various movement disorders (including NMR, SPECT and PET, which are available externally)
  • Drug therapy based on the latest scientific findings and the patient’s individual needs
  • Physical therapies: physiotherapy, water aerobics, massages, medicinal training therapy for younger Parkinson patients and patients in the early stages of Parkinson’s (endurance training, treadmill therapy, therapeutic climbing, Nordic walking)
  • Speech therapy (according to Lee Silverman)
  • Occupational therapy
  • Respiratory and relaxation therapy (autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation)
  • Targeted training of mental skills through brain training methods such as brain jogging
  • Psychotherapeutic management and support of patients with the participation of relatives

The team

The multi-disciplinary Parkinson team consists of 84 members of staff, including eight doctors, two psychologists, a speech therapist, two occupational therapists, seven physiotherapists, 31 nurses, three assistant medical technicians and three secretaries. They look after between 950 and 1,000 resident patients every year. An additional 300 patients are cared for on an out-patient basis.

Registration

To register at the Parkinson-Klinik Wolfach, all that is required is a referral from the patient’s GP or specialist consultant. Patients from all health insurance schemes and self-pay patients are eligible for treatment. A report on diagnostic findings from the patient's GP should be submitted together with the hospital referral. Detailed registration documents will then be sent to the patient by post.

To make an appointment for in-patient treatment, contact Ms. Sonja Birnfeld. She will also provide information about the clinic’s optional services.
